Zeola Fay Hickman-Mason, the daughter of Thomas L. Hickman and Ruby M Hickman was born December 16, 1949, in Des Moines, Iowa. Fay was one of a set of triplet sisters. Fay lived all her life in Des Moines where she was educated in the public school system and graduated from Des Moines North High School in 1968.
On October 4, 1975, Fay was united in matrimony to the late Julien Timothy Mason. Through this union, they were blessed with three children: Michael, Tylonda and Kisha Mason.
At an early age, Fay joined Mt. Hebron Missionary Baptist Church with her family under the leadership of the late Rev. James Harris. In 1970, she transferred her membership to Morningstar Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Alex Crawford. In 2012, Fay became a new member of Faith Missionary Baptist Church under Rev Dale Terry. Fay served on the usher board, participated in Faith Baptist Christian Bible courses, Faith mission board meetings, assisted with the food pantry and helped serve lunches on Tuesdays at Joshua Christian Academy.
Fay was employed with Blue Cross and Blue Shield for over 25 years and retired from there in 2002. After five years of retirement, Fay decided to go back to work part-time for Executive Chiropractic as a Chiropractic Assistant. In August 2019, she retired once again to stay home and help raise her granddaughter, Jordyn.
Fay was a member of the Des Moines Iowa Club and Mary Church Terrell Club #3. She loved spending time with her grandkids and family. Fay was a big fan of NBA Basketball with her favorite teams being the Chicago Bulls in the 80's and now the Golden State Warriors. She was also a member of the September Sistah Girls Club, even if her birthday was in December. Fay had a quiet demeanor and a laid back style. Even when she wasn't feeling the best, she wouldn't complain. Her smile was either sweet or mischievous, depending on the situation. She had a way of giving you an "under the radar zing", and would then step back and say "What?", like she hadn't said a word. She was an old school Mom who didn't play. But you still knew you were loved.
Preceding her in death are her parents, Thomas and Ruby Hickman, and stepmother Nancy Hickman; husband, Julien T Mason; mother-in-law, Jesserean Dixon; father-in-law, Julien G Mason; five sisters, ElZonea Sanders, Lessie B Sanders, Minnie Gooding, Lottie Mae Holmes and Vernell Hall; three brothers, Johnny Holmes, Brian Hickman and George Warren; two sisters-in-law, Daisy Holmes and Elaine Boyd, and brother-in-law Alpha Dixon.
Fay leaves behind to cherish in her memory, a son, Michael T Mason of Des Moines, IA; two daughters, Tylonda Mason of Des Moines, IA and Kisha Lovejoy of Kansas City, MO; five grandchildren, Aliesa Mason, DeShawn Lovejoy, DeMarcus Lovejoy, Julien Mason, and Jordyn Oakley; sisters, Zellee Kay Coleman (Alfred) of San Jose, CA, Zola Mae Garrett of Des Moines, IA and Yvonne Burrell of Waukee, IA.
