Pastor George Talmadge Price Sr. was born on November 10, 1937, to Lydia and Eugene Price. Pastor Price was born in Moberly, Missouri and later moved to Des Moines, Iowa with his parents as an only child when his father Eugene was looking for better employment opportunities to support his family.
Dad Price was married to the love of his life, Mother Bessie E. Price at the time of her passing 63 years. Through their union they had five children, George T. Price Jr., Gregory S. Price, Shari L. Price, Shellie R. Price, and Michelle L. Price. Pastor and mother also raised their niece after her mother's passing, Regina M. Johnson. Dad also played a major role in assisting his daughter Shellie with the raising and rearing of his first grandchild and only grandson Roman.
Dad Price graduated from East High School here in Des Moines, Iowa. In school Dad enjoyed participating in various sports, but his favorite was running track. Dad wanted to become a teacher, but he got married and decided it was best that he look for work to take care of his family instead. Dad was employed with Armstrong Tire Company which later changed its name to Pirelli Tires for 35 years. Dad retired for one year while he completed every task he could think about around the house. Once he did all he could at home, he then decided he was bored and went back to work as a shuttle driver for Mercy Adult Daycare for another 15 years driving around the elderly that was his age!
Dad gave his life to God at the early age of 9. He told us that he always felt different than other kids his age and that was because he had a call on his life. When Dad was 16 years old, he was the Iowa Church of God in Christ Jurisdictional Secretary under the leadership of Bishop Louis Henry Ford. As Dad grew in the church, he became an ordained Deacon at East University Church of God in Christ where he worshipped for decades. In 1979, Dad and Mother Price moved their membership to help our mother's brother Pastor Roland Warren Sr. church to help grow his ministry. They remained members at Trinity Temple Church of God in Christ for over 25 years.
Dad had advised his children that he ran from the calling of becoming an Elder as he was hearing from the voice of the Lord that it was meant for him to become a pastor. He knew the responsibility and the charge that came with that position. He later answered that call and was ordained an Elder by Bishop Hurley Bassett Sr. Pastor Price was so knowledgeable in the word and had put in over 30 plus years as a servant as Deacon that Bishop Bassett advised him, he did not need to go before the board, and he granted him his ordination. It was not until 1999 where Dad accepted his true calling to become the Pastor of Grace Temple Church of God in Christ before retiring in 2013. Pastor Price also served as the Iowa Jurisdiction State Chaplain after his father Elder Eugene Price was moved to emeritus status upon becoming ill. Pastor Price was also the L.H. Ford District Secretary under the leadership of Pastor James McNear Sr. Dad also served as the Sunday School Superintendent at Trinity Temple COGIC. This is where he taught his children everything they needed to know about God and the bible. He would make us study the books of the bible so that we knew how to navigate the word when the preacher was preaching. He would quiz us about the Bible, and he made learning about the word of God fun for us. When Dad retired from pastoring in 2013, he and mother decided that they were going to join Revival Center COGIC. They always loved Pastor Cameron and saw how God had made him a new creature when he saved him and wanted to support his ministry in any way that they could. Pastor Cameron will always say he was humbled by their membership because they could have gone anywhere else, but they chose him to be their Pastor, and he was honored that they did so.
Dad Price was an awesome father to his children. We all looked at him as our own personal SUPERMAN! Dad coached his sons George and Greg in the Salvation Army Basketball team that won several championships under his leadership. Dad never missed a game, a concert, a parent teacher conference, or a special event if his children or grandchildren participated. Dad supported his children in whatever they wanted to do in life if it was going to help them "amount to something!" Dad would ask all his children frequently, "Do you ever think you will amount to anything?" We laugh about that to this day and will probably laugh about it every time we think about it for the rest of our lives.
