Nathaniel Lee Burgs was born on July 21st in St. Louis, Missouri, to Ella (Casey) and Emmanuel Burgs, Sr. He died on October 30th, 2025, at the age of 68 in Iowa City, Iowa.
He received his education in Des Moines and Hazelwood, Missouri. He was awarded an associate of arts degree from Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids.
Nathan was the middle child in a family of five siblings. He moved to Des Moines from Missouri as a toddler in 1960. He spent most of his life in Des Moines but had also lived in the Iowa City/ Coralville area for a time.
Nate loved to cook, play cards and dominoes, and was a chess master. He was quite the prankster and loved to torment his older sister, Audrey, when they were growing up.
He and the love of his life, Melanie Green, were parents of two sons. One son, also named Nathan, who died in infancy, and Army Sergeant First Class Nataniel Green, now of Houston, Texas.
Nathan was preceded in death by his parents, his infant son, his sister Jeanne, his nephew Emmanuel Jr Burgs II, his nephew Jay Foster, his nephew Lawerence Burgs, Sr, and a niece, Shania Nichols.
He is survived by his son, Nataniel (Seaney) Green of Houston: a sister, Audrey Burgs of Des Moines; two brothers, Emanuel Burgs, Jr. and Charles Foster, Jr., both of Des Moines; one grandson, Taushaun Woolery of Houston; three granddaughters, Destiny Jones of Houston, Daja Tolbert and Jada Tolbert, both of Atlanta; one great-grandson, Sincere Tolbert, also of Atlanta; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family and friends.
A Celebration of Life honoring Nathaniel will be held during the Burgs/Foster Family Picnic in June 2026.
