Martin Wanjala Wafula, 60, of Johnston, Iowa, passed away on Friday, September 19, 2025, at MercyOne Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa. A visitation will be held on 10/02/2025 from 4pm to 5pm at the Henderson Funeral Home and another Visitation to be held on 10/03/2025 from 4pm to 5pm followed by memorial service from 5pm to 6pm at Imani Family Church in West Des Moines. Burial will be in Ngorera - Sibanga - Kitale - Kenya.
Martin was born on May 31, 1965, to Vincent Wafula Matofali and Josephine Nasimiyu Matofali. He grew up in Western Kenya and later migrated to Trans Nzioa in a settlement Scheme where he lived and finished his A level education.
He relocated to Thika Town where he was employed at Polysack - a textile Company. In a few years he met his first Love Ms. Jane Njoki with whom they started a Retail and Whole Sale business in Thika named Cherengani - Thika. They were blessed with two children Kennedy and Maureen Wanjala.
In 2008 Martin met and married his wife Mercy Nyasende and started another Business with her called Mermat LLC which is running todate. They were blessed with two children X'ian and Labrisha Wanjala. In 2015, he moved to Bloomington, Minnesota with his family where he worked under employment by different companies and finally in the Healthcare field till March 2022 when he moved to Iowa with an intent to start a new life and went through a divorce in the same year. He was once again employed in health care by different facilities until 2023 when he became an independent Contractor in the same field till his death. While in Iowa Martin lived on the south side of Des Moines and eventually moved to Johnston Iowa till his death.
Martin was introduced to Imani Family Church in West Des Moines around 2022 by a friend (Elicah Makokha) when he just moved to Iowa and joined the church though he was not an active member. He preferred to worship online.
He loved spending time with his family, he loved entrepreneurship, fishing, and gardening. During his free time, he enjoyed dancing to gospel music and barbecuing. One thing he did not like was outdoor socializing and shopping.
Those left to cherish his memories are his children, Kennedy Wanjala, Maureen Wanjala, Xian Wanjala, and Labrisha Wanjala; grandchildren Aiden, Shantel Lopez, and Jacob Dinezen, mother of his children Mercy Nyasende and Jane Njoki; parents Vincent and Josephine Wafula; siblings Njani Florence, Jackline Wafula, Sophia Wafula, Richard Wafula, John Wafula, Eunice Wafula, Joseph Wafula and Stephen Wafula; father-n-law Nobert Mosioma; mothers-in-law Patricia Mosioma and Hellen Nyambura; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews, sister in-laws and brother in-laws.
He was preceded in death by his son Bill Wanjala, brother Fred Wafula, and father-in-law Charles Wanjugi.
