Lawrence Abston Sr., born on April 21, 1968, in Mobile, Alabama, was the second of triplets born to Sallie and Luke Abston Jr. Weighing only two pounds at birth, Lawrence overcame early challenges and spent his formative years in Moss Point, Mississippi, where he graduated from Moss Point High School in 1986.
Following graduation, Lawrence lived in Georgia with his triplet brother, Luke III, before eventually settling in Des Moines, Iowa. There, he met and married Ericka Smith, his beloved wife of 36 years. Together, they raised three children and were blessed with four grandchildren.
Lawrence worked as an Over the Road (OTR) truck driver for many companies, a career that allowed him to travel extensively—a passion he loved. Later, due to health concerns, he transitioned to working at Titan Tires as a forklift driver.
A devoted family man with a lively spirit, Lawrence enjoyed fishing, grilling, and engaging in spirited conversations with family and friends. His faith was an important part of his life, often sharing his thoughts about God and cherishing time spent with loved ones.
Throughout his life, Lawrence faced numerous challenges, yet family remained his steadfast priority. He passed away peacefully at home on March 19, 2026, at the age of 57.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Sallie Mae Abston; brothers James Bishop and Vinson Abston; sister Brenda Bishop; and grandparents Luke Sr. and Aline Abston, and Willie and Della Washington.
Lawrence is survived by his wife, Ericka Abston; children Raven, Lawrence Jr., and Antwan; grandchildren Brielle, DreSean, Ariyae, and Lauren; his father, Luke Abston Jr. of Moss Point, Mississippi; sisters Sallie (Gregory) Johnson of Ocean Springs, Mississippi, and triplet sister Lavern (Andrew) Ferguson of Pascagoula, Mississippi; triplet brother Luke Abston III of Douglasville, Georgia; close friend Pastor Ron Random of Des Moines, Iowa; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.
He will be fondly remembered for his lively phone calls, humor, and the unmistakable warmth of his voice. Lawrence's presence will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
