John Patterson, 98, formerly of Collins, Iowa, passed away on Monday, December 29, 2025, at Rock Creek Senior Living, in Ankeny, Iowa surrounded by his loving family. Funeral service will be at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, January 2, 2026, at Hendersons Funeral & Cremation Care. Burial will follow in the Merle Hay Musoleum in Des Moines.
John was born on April 1, 1927 in Collins, Iowa to John Walter "Dick" and Velma (Jones) Patterson.
John grew up in Collins and graduated from Collins High School in 1945. On May 29, 1945 John joined the Navy as a Seaman, first class. He was crossing the Pacific on the USS Maryland when he heard the news that World War II had ended. John was stationed at Pearl Harbor for the remainder of his time in the Navy where he worked in transportation until his honorable discharge.
On June 18, 1948 he married his high school sweetheart, Jenalva "Jenny" Patterson at the Collins Methodist Church. John and Jenny had two sons; Keith and Kirk. John was self-employed most of his life and owned many businesses with Jenny including; J.E. Patterson Local and Long Distance Hauling, Patterson Supply Company and Patterson Used Cars. He enjoyed riding his motorcycles and caring for his many vehicles and buildings. John finally retired at the young age of 95.
Those left to honor and remember him include his two sons: Keith (Cindy) of Ankeny and Kirk (Jodi) of Johnston. Seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren: Kevin (Kaity) Kellen & Krue; Kent (Laura) Kael, Kylee, Kase; Kyle (Julia) Beau, Ella; Daryl Ann, Jaxon; Jared; Ellie; Ava; and a Sister-In_Law, Lois Reitveld.
John was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Jenny and two brothers Merle and Larry.
