Jerome Austin, 67, of Des Moines, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, at home. Jerome was born on December 27, 1957, to Tommie Austin and Lattie Nevels in Cotton Plant, Arkansas. Jerome's family moved to Des Moines, Iowa, in 1958, where he was educated in the Des Moines Public Schools System, and he graduated from East High School. Jerome worked with the Des Moines Public Schools for 23 years as a custodian. On October 22, 2016, Jerome married Mary Bell, and they blended their families. Jerome was a member of E. 17th St C.O.G.I.C. under the leadership of the late Dr. M. Anthony Bell. He was preceded in death by his parents, Tommie and Lattie Austin, grandparents, Willie D. and Beatrice D Thomas, uncles, Alonzo (Samela) William Austin, Ollie L Sr (VeElla) Sloan, Lonnie (Ernestine) Shockley, William A (Fred) Thomas, Scipio (Lillie B) Thomas, aunts, Phongenia Clay, Joyce M Thomas and Sally Thomas. Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Mary, his daughter, Jericka Austin, his stepdaughter Aricca Daye, his 3 sisters, Florgenia (Harold) Johnson, Maureen Austin and Tommie Jean Austin, his 4 brother-in-laws Benjamin (Julie) Bell Jr, John Bell, J Curtis Bell, and Brice Nichols, and a host of extended family and friends.
