It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of George J. Kotlers, aged 73, of Des Moines, Iowa. Mr. Kotlers passed away on April 2, 2026, at MercyOne in Des Moines. George was born on December 12, 1952, in Des Moines to John and Helen (Volonts) Kotlers. He was raised on the east side of Des Moines and graduated from Dowling High School in 1970. Initially working in various factories, George eventually pursued a career as a carpenter before deciding to further his education. He attended Iowa State University, where he earned a degree in civil engineering. Subsequently, he joined the Iowa Department of Transportation's bridge office, where he dedicated over 25 years as a respected bridge designer. George was a devoted family man and valued his time spent with friends. He maintained weekly traditions of meeting friends for coffee on Thursdays and sharing lunch with his niece, Kristina, every Friday. Known for his kind nature, George enjoyed gardening, socializing, watching football, and was an avid supporter of the Chicago Bears. He is survived by his brother, Norbert Kotlers; niece, Kristi (James Jefferson) Kotlers; great-niece, Jesse Jefferson; and great-nephews, James and Jrue Jefferson. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Helen Kotlers, and his brother, John Kotlers. Memorial contributions in George's honor may be made to any homeless shelter in Des Moines.
