Floyd Wright Sr., a lifelong resident of Iowa, passed away peacefully on August 25, 2025. Born in Waterloo on March 28, 1956, Floyd later moved to Des Moines where he became a pillar of his community. Floyd was the embodiment of the quote, "Life isn't about finding yourself, it's about creating yourself." Through his adventurous and industrious spirit, Floyd continuously carved out an existence that was uniquely his own, leaving an indelible mark on those fortunate enough to know him.
Floyd was a man who was never content to sit still, always seeking a new challenge or a new skill to master. He was an accomplished athlete, excelling in basketball, football, and track during his school years. His love for the thrill of racing and his natural mechanical aptitude led him to develop a passion for working on cars and trucks. Floyd was equally at home under the hood of a vehicle as he was on the running track, his hands as adept at manipulating a wrench as they were a basketball. In his professional life, Floyd was a respected dry cleaner, a trade he mastered and applied with the same meticulous attention to detail that he brought to all his endeavors.
Floyd was a beloved member of the Carter Memorial Church and later the Mount Olive Baptist Church, where he was a familiar and comforting presence. He is survived by his loving wife, Linda, his son Floyd Jr, his sister Darlene Williams, and his brother, James Sr. He was preceded in death by his parents, Russell and Maggie Wright, and his siblings Robert, Leroy, Barbara, Bertha, Virginia, Essie, and Ann Wright. As Mark Twain once said, "The fear of death follows from the fear of life. A man who lives fully is prepared to die at any time." Floyd lived his life fully, and his spirit will endure in the hearts of those who loved him.
A memorial service for Floyd will be held at Mount Olive Baptist Church, 3100 2nd Avenue, Des Moines, Iowa, on Thursday, September 11, 2025, at 1:00pmCDT. Floyd lived a life full of joy, hard work, and love, and his memory will be cherished by all who knew him. We invite you to share your memories and photographs of Floyd on his memorial page, allowing us all to celebrate the remarkable life he led.
