Obituary

“

Cindy was a devoted, family-oriented woman, remembered for her motherly nature and the steady care she gave those around her.

Cindy Gooding McNaul passed away peacefully at Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa, on September 7, 2026, surrounded by her family. She was born on December 14, 1954, in Des Moines, and remained deeply connected to the Highland Park area throughout her life.

Cindy was a devoted, family-oriented woman, remembered for her motherly nature and the steady care she gave those around her. She built a life centered on service, compassion, and community. In her working years, she was a salesperson at Action Accents, where she sold high school swim team swimwear. She also served as an associate for Des Moines Public Schools and Holy Family, continuing in that role until her retirement. Along the way, she also worked as a caregiver for children with special needs, a role that reflected her generous heart and patient spirit.

Education remained an important part of Cindy’s story. She attended North High School and graduated from Dowling Catholic High School. She remained an active alumna of both schools and gave her time and energy as a volunteer and fundraiser for the North High School Drama Department. Her faith was also an important part of her life, and she was a member of the St. Ambrose Cathedral.

Cindy found joy in the traditions and simple pleasures that made life rich. She loved the Iowa State Fair and attended all 11 days each year, a tradition that spoke to her enthusiasm and delight in gathering with others. She enjoyed crocheting, and in her younger years she also loved fishing and camping.

Above all, Cindy treasured her family. She is survived by her husband, Art McNaul. She also leaves her children and their families: Mindy and her husband Joe Stout, Greg Palmersheim Jr., Sam and his wife Sheri McNaul, Amy and her husband Jeff Rost, and Jay McNaul. Her love extended to her grandchildren, Alex, Hayden, Rae Lynn, Elijah, Isaiah, Sebastian, three great-grandchildren, and her close friend Emily Brown, who were an important part of her life and brought her great pride and happiness.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Darlene Gooding; her aunt, May King; and her cousin, Phyllis Franzen. Cindy will be remembered for the care she gave, the loyalty she showed to her family and community, and the warmth she brought into the lives of others. Her memory will remain a lasting blessing to all who knew and loved her.
